Chemical Plant in China Explodes

A BLAST at a chemical plant in southwest China left 19 people dead and wounded 12 others. It was submitted by the authorities on Friday (13/7). The latest industrial accidents occur in countries where the regulations are loose.

The local Occupational Safety Administration website said the explosion occurred on Thursday evening at 6:30 pm at an industrial park in Yibin City in Sichuan Province.
"The wounded have been taken to the hospital and are in stable condition," the county official added by adding that the fire had been extinguished.

Photographs on a local news site show what looks like a burning shell with a building surrounded by rubble. According to the official Xinhua news agency, chemicals manufacturer Hengda is the owner of the burning building.

China has been shaken by several industrial accidents in recent years. The septic tank explosion in November destroyed light industrial areas in Ningbo, just south of Shanghai. In 2015, a giant chemical explosion at a container storage facility killed at least 165 people in the northern port city of Tianjin.

The blast caused more than US $ 1 billion in damages. The explosion also triggered widespread resentment due to a lack of transparency about the cause of the accident and its environmental impact.

The government's investigation finally recommended 123 people to be punished. The mayor of Tianjin at the time of the accident was sentenced to 12 years in prison for corruption in September.
