Apartment collapsed in India

NUMBER of deaths from apartment blocks that collapsed outside Delhi, India, rose to nine on Thursday (19/7). Rescue teams pulled four more bodies from a huge pile of rubble and metal, according to Indian firefighting brigades.

The six-story building collapsed on Tuesday night and hit a neighboring building, trapping more than a dozen people, including laborers and two families in Greater Noida, a satellite city east of the Indian capital.

Five bodies were pulled out on Wednesday (18/7) with nearly 150 workers using steel cutters and drill-assisted sniffer dogs along the concrete and metal.

"We have found four bodies since last night. The operation will continue until the place is cleared," said Regional Fire Chief Arun Kumar Singh. Police have arrested four people, including apartment owners, on charges of premeditated murder and wanted to question 20 others.

Hundreds of low-budget housing complexes have sprung up in recent years in many fast-growing satellite cities. But construction companies often cut their budgets by choosing to use cheap materials.

Building collapse is common throughout India, especially during the rainy season from late June to September, although it is not clear the latest disaster was caused by recent heavy rains.
